This time two years ago we welcomed in our first staff to our new landmark office in York city centre – a striking addition to the Hungate area of the city, an area that was once a wool market in medieval times.
Our Hiscox building in York is a multi-function office, housing everything from underwriting, claims, customer services, IT, HR and other operational roles as well as our Customer Experience Centre. It’s also home to our Hiscox Business Club where start-ups can network and collaborate.
Designed by architects Make, whose founder worked on The Gherkin which is opposite our building in London, it has since been shortlisted for, and won, many architectural awards including the RIBA Yorkshire award (shortlisted) and York Design award (winner: large commercial)
Many architects would consider the approach to our building in York to epitomise architectural design in its purest form, for instance the exposed curved concrete walls and ceilings.
Our building’s centrepiece is a decommissioned rocket that sits in the heart of our four-storey height atrium. Some interesting facts about our Hiscox rocket:
- it’s the result of a peaceful collaboration between Russia and the USA
- created as part of a project code-named Kholod (means ‘cold’ in Russian)
- it was the fastest thing on earth for 10 years (1991 – 2001)
- capable of achieving Mach 6.47 (that’s 7,926 km/h or 4,925 mph, equal to 20 times the top speed of a McLaren F1)
Take a look round our building and see the rocket for yourself in our 360 video.
