#1: Wearable technology
The International CES in Las Vegas is the place where the consumer electronics industry shows off its products for 2014 and beyond: the usual mix of future gazing and the practical and the impractical. One prominent theme is wearable technology. Nike’s Fuelband and Jawbone’s Up have been around for a while now but putting data collection into all kinds of things and connecting them to the internet is continuing at a great pace, and moving out of fitness and sports, into the mainstream.
#2: Google and Nest
It’s not often words like ‘thermostat’ start trending on Twitter but earlier this week Google’s $3.2bn purchase of smart-thermostat company Nest set this one running. Nest is a maker of internet-connected round-the-home devices, creating a platform within your home to connect these devices. Couple Nests’s platform with Google’s obsession with data and solving information problems, and this could be a major step towards the truly smart home.
