What is public liability insurance for events?

Public liability insurance for events covers you, your employees and your company against claims from members of the public and venue management in the event that an accident happens at an event you’re hosting. For example, if an attendee is injured during a sporting exhibition, or their property damaged, events public liability insurance protects you in the event of a claim.

This type of insurance differs from public liability insurance for businesses, which is concerned with a nine-to-five place of business. Public liability insurance for events is designed to protect you at external conferences and events. So, if your business prides itself on throwing a memorable event for clients – and especially if that’s your bread and butter – this insurance can help ensure events go off without a hitch.

Do I need public liability insurance for an event?

Public liability insurance for events is designed to provide cover for events to which members of the public are admitted. Whether that’s a private business function or conference, or a concert performance, this type of insurance assures promoters and punters alike that their safety is paramount.

Although public liability insurance for events isn’t a legal requirement in the UK, But event organisers may be required to provide proof that their event is insured before a venue will allow it to go ahead.

There is also a different, broader form of public liability insurance that protects your business against claims from customers or members of the public that arise as a result of your work, whether occurring at your workplace or through the actions of employees while working on your company’s behalf.

When should I get public liability insurance for an event?

Typically, the earlier you secure insurance ahead of your event, the better. Alternatively, if you plan to run a regular series of gigs or exhibitions across multiple venues, you may want to consider insurance for each occasion. Our flexible events insurance packages let you choose how many events you want us to provide cover for, and with an annual cover package you would be protected the whole year round.

How much event public liability insurance cover will I need?

You can obtain cover of up to £10 million, but it all depends on the type of event you’re planning. A morning carol concert at the local village hall will likely pose significantly less risk to attendees than a weekend-long open-air music festival. Our policies aim to be flexible enough to meet the requirements your event may need.

What’s included in your event public liability cover?

Key features of the cover include:

  • Public liability cover up to £10 million
  • Bodily injury to participants in non-hazardous activities - your legal liability for this is covered automatically
  • Participant cover

Additional covers available at an additional cost:

  • Increased indemnity limit for public liability
  • Employers’ liability for your employees or casual or volunteer staff

Event public liability insurance FAQs

How much does event public liability insurance cost?

The cost of public liability insurance for events varies based on the limits covered.

Different limits apply depending on the type of insurance you take out, as well as the specifics of the event you’re arranging to cover due to the perceived risk, such as the number of attendees you’re expecting.

What other insurance do I need for an event?

There are other risks that come with organising events, as well as maintaining the safety of attendees. You may want to consider event organiser insurance, which covers the below:

  • Cancellation. If your event is cancelled, postponed or cut short as a result of events beyond your control, you won’t be liable for loss of profits and expenses.
  • Property insurance. We can rebuild, replace and repair property that you’re held liable for the cost of, up to £50,000.
  • Public liability. Covers the costs due to a third-party in the case of injury or damage to their property. Your defence costs are also covered.
  • Employers’ liability. Covers damages and defence costs due to an employee if they’re injured at your event. This cover is a legal requirement under UK law (external link) for most businesses with employees.

Business insurance for event organisers might be another consideration. This covers aspects of running your day-to-day business such as office insurance, employers’ liability and cyber and data risks insurance. In the case of the latter, your events business may be responsible for holding swathes of customer and client data. If an attack happens, and their data is compromised, this cover can help with a claim made for the loss.

Does public liability insurance for events cover public liability in my day-to-day?

No, events public liability insurance is explicitly designed to cover claims which specifically occur at the event, or in transit. Your day-to-day business is not covered – business insurance can help here.
