Who needs it?

Whether you work from home or a separate business premises, having the right insurance cover for your office is important. We understand that every small business is different so we offer policy options you can tailor to your own specific needs.

Our business contents insurance covers the cost of replacing or repairing your office equipment if it is accidentally damaged, lost or stolen. In addition, you can also add a range of specialist covers to your policy: portable equipment, business interruption, equipment breakdown and buildings.

What type of insurance do I need?

If you own the building your office is located in, you should consider office buildings insurance. This offers protection against damage that may occur to the actual property, such as flood or fire damage, but not the actual contents of the office or your work equipment. For this, you’ll need to ensure you’ve taken out office contents cover.

Hiscox Office Buildings Insurance includes:

  • accidental damage cover as standard as well as cover for standard risks such as storms, floods and fire
  • rebuilding costs, which includes all professional fees and costs associated with rebuilding your office
  • trace and access – cover for the cost of locating damage to cables, underground pipes and drains or the source of a gas or water leak
  • loss prevention costs – we will pay the reasonable and necessary cost of protecting your building from imminent damage.

Many small businesses use laptops and other forms of portable technology to keep in regular contact with employees and clients. These can be expensive to replace, so adding our portable equipment cover to your Hiscox Office Insurance policy can give you peace of mind that your portable technology is protected.

Our portable equipment cover allows you to select worldwide, Europe or UK cover as standard and will protect the following items:

  • laptops
  • hand-held mobile technology
  • mobile phones
  • digital cameras and video cameras
  • portable ancillary computer equipment e.g. printers
  • photographic and other visual display equipment, such as projectors
  • hardware and tools.

Business interruption insurance is designed to cover your business against the loss of income that is the result of being unable to trade due to an unexpected interruption, such as insured damage to property. This may be because of unforeseen circumstances such as a fire, flood or major theft that have left your business premises unusable.

In case this happens to you, it’s important to consider how you would keep your business running in the interim, including how you would pay bills and maintain relationships with your clients and suppliers.

Our business interruption insurance can protect your business from the impacts of an interruption to your business caused by insured damage to:

  • your office, for example flood, fire or vandalism
  • property nearby which prevents access to your office, for example a gas explosion at a neighbouring building which has led to the entire area being closed off
  • the premises of a supplier of yours in the EU.

Equipment breakdown insurance is designed to protect your business against the cost of replacing or repairing your equipment that is damaged as a result of a sudden mechanical or electrical breakdown. It could be the breakdown of a network server, or a compressor failure that causes the air conditioning to fail. Having the right insurance cover in place can give you the peace of mind that you’ll be able to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.

Now things are running just how you want them to. But have you thought about what would happen if a vital piece of your office equipment broke down?
