Frequently asked questions about LeakBot

LeakBot is a smart water leak detector that alerts you to hidden leaks early so you can deal with them before they become a bigger problem. It’s really easy to set up and monitors your home's water supply pipe 24 hours a day sending alerts to your mobile phone.

LeakBot’s patented Thermi-Q technology accurately measures both the air and pipe temperatures in your home. If you have a leak, it will continually draw colder water from outside into your home, creating a consistent drop in temperature. LeakBot can sense the prolonged and consistent drop in temperature and alerts you to the problem.

Once LeakBot is fitted on to your internal mains cold water pipe supply, the same one where you’ll find your internal stop tap, LeakBot will detect leaks on any pipe with a water flow that it’s fitted to. Installed correctly, it should monitor all the mains hot and cold water pipes running throughout the house. LeakBot does not monitor systems in your home that are ‘closed off’ from your mains water system; for example, a central heating system, a waste water system or an extension to your house with additional stop taps.

Most leak alerts will be small, low-level leaks, so there is no need to panic. In many cases, the leak will be something simple like a leaking toilet cistern or a dripping tap which the LeakBot app will help you find and which is easily fixed. If you are unable to find the cause or are concerned by what you find, you can arrange for an approved specialist LeakBot plumber to attend your property. LeakBot will locate and look to remedy your leak leaving your home leak free. LeakBot is a HomeServe Labs Limited innovation, which is part of the HomeServe Group.

Should you experience a leak alert from your LeakBot, Hiscox will cover the cost of 1 home visit per device every 12 months from a specialist LeakBot engineer. The 12 month period begins on the date you order your LeakBot device and upon each anniversary of this date. You will be responsible for the full cost of any further visits required. The leak location and repair services are subject to LeakBot terms and conditions which will be provided at the time of booking a home visit and can be found at https://leakbot.io/repair-terms (external link)

A specialist LeakBot engineer will locate and look to remedy any issues to help leave your property leak free. This is not a ‘standard’ plumbing repair visit. The engineer will use the data from your LeakBot and specialist equipment to locate a leak or leaks on your internal plumbing system supplied by your mains water supply pipe. Due to this approach, intrusive work is a last resort and you would always have the option to contact Hiscox beforehand to identify whether any costs of the work are covered by your Hiscox insurance policy.

When you purchase a Hiscox Home Insurance policy, with buildings cover, you will receive an invite by post or email to redeem your free LeakBot. You will not need to pay for this device.

Please call 0800 840 2407 and let us know so that we can ensure that any of your LeakBot data received up to that point is fully anonymised and HomeServe Labs Limited can disable your LeakBot monitor and alert features. LeakBot can supply you with a free post addressed envelope for you to return the device.

If you are having problems installing your LeakBot and need any further help, you can contact the LeakBot team by emailing them at [email protected]. They will be happy to talk you through installation and answer any questions you might have.

Should you have any reason to make a complaint about the LeakBot device or any home visit service you experience, please contact the LeakBot team at [email protected].

If you have any other questions

Feel free to get in touch with the LeakBot team and they will be happy to discuss any questions with you. You can contact them on [email protected].

Frequently asked questions about Hiscox and LeakBot

Leak alerts or requests for LeakBot engineering services will not impact the renewal premium of your Hiscox insurance policy except in circumstances that lead to a claim being made on your policy.

Hiscox will cover the cost of 1 home visit per device every 12 months from a specialist LeakBot engineer. The 12 month period begins on the date you order your LeakBot device and upon each anniversary of this date. The leak location and repair visit will include all labour and parts required to make your property leak free. All parts provided are standard and guaranteed for 12 months. If you wish to have specific parts fitted then you will need to supply these to the engineer.

You can access specialist plumbing visits from LeakBot if required, which will be at a cost to you. All LeakBot services will be subject to their terms and conditions which will be provided at the time of booking your home visit. If there is insured damage as a result of a leak, or trace and access costs are to be incurred to locate a leak, this can be claimed for under your Hiscox insurance policy (subject to the terms and conditions of your policy and the application of your normal excess) and you should contact us, using the contact details in your policy documentation to make a claim.

The terms of your Hiscox policy will not change if you accept a LeakBot and you forget to respond to a leak alert. This will not affect any insurance claim you submit but we strongly recommend that any such alerts are investigated as soon as possible.

Hiscox will use information provided to it from the LeakBot device to learn more about leak alerts and their correlation to escape of water claims, understand how customers react to these alerts and to enhance the way that we price for escape of water exposure in our household portfolio. Enhancing our pricing model for escape of water will allow us to be more accurate when considering the age, construction type, location and other characteristics of a property. Hiscox will not use information from LeakBot to make individual underwriting or pricing decisions or for the purposes of making claims handling decisions on your home insurance policy.

Hiscox will have access to data from LeakBot that will enable us to determine whether a LeakBot has been installed, if a leak alert has been received and whether that alert is resolved on that Leakbot. Hiscox will retain this information at least for the duration of your insurance policy and will review retention of any personal data in accordance with the Hiscox privacy policy which can be found at www.hiscox.co.uk/cookies-privacy

If you cancel your Hiscox insurance policy, you will lose access to the leak monitoring and engineering services that support your LeakBot. LeakBot will contact you directly and provide you with the opportunity to enter in to a direct, paid for subscription service with them in order to continue to receive the full benefit of your LeakBot device. Once you cancel your policy, Hiscox will no longer receive any data from your LeakBot and your existing data will be anonymised.
