London, UK (11th October 2013) – Specialist global insurer Hiscox has now submitted its full planning application for a new purpose built office, located in the Hungate area of York.
An important part of the wider Hungate regeneration plans, the Hiscox office building represents a £19 million investment and will create up to 500 professional jobs – bringing real economic benefit to the city. In addition to its full planning application for a new purpose built office, an outline planning application has also been submitted for a future development on the site. This will be for flexible retail and leisure use on the ground floor, with a dual use of office or hotel on the upper levels.
The application also include plans for new landscaped public areas with lighting and seating, as well as pedestrian and cycle paths to connect the River Foss and Hungate masterplan with the city centre and York Minster.
Steve Langan, Managing Director for Hiscox UK & Ireland, explained: “We’re hugely excited to have a significant presence here in York and have received overwhelmingly positive feedback on our plans from local people so far. We met more than 150 local business owners and residents during our public consultation events this summer, and the feedback from these events really helped shape our final plans.
“We now look forward to the determination of the application in due course, but we anticipate that this will be by the end of this year. In the meantime we continue to grow into our temporary offices at Mallard House, next door to what will be our permanent site, and prepare to embark on the next phase of recruitment in early 2014.”
Located on the site of the former 19th Century Wool Market, the insurer’s proposed new office has been inspired by the site’s artisan and textile past. The building’s glass and stone structure incorporates an elegant weave pattern, making reference to one of the city’s founding industries and taking inspiration from the City Walls. Designed by architectural firm Make and occupying nearly 50,000 sq ft over four floors, the building will be bright and airy, boasting a stunning atrium and a roof terrace with views of York Minster.
