London, UK (20th December 2013) – Specialist global insurer Hiscox last night gained full planning approval for its new purpose built office at what was the last City of York Council Planning Committee meeting of 2013.
Commenting on the outcome of the planning application, Steve Langan, Managing Director for Hiscox UK & Europe, said: “We are naturally delighted with the planning committee’s decision to unanimously approve the plans for our purpose built York office on the site next to the Black Swan pub in the Hungate area of York. This is a significant investment for us as a business, as it will be our largest office in the UK outside of London and employ up to 500 people.
“We’re committed to York and to creating a building that represents a progressive and high quality addition to York’s long architectural history. We are now keen to get to work and last night’s decision means we can finalise preparations on-site with the Council ahead of construction starting around April 2014. Anyone interested in keeping up to date on our progress can do so via our dedicated York website, www.hiscoxyork.co.uk.”
An important part of the wider Hungate regeneration plans, the Hiscox office building represents a £19 million investment and will create up to 500 professional jobs – bringing real economic benefit to the city. Alongside Hiscox’s new purpose built office, an outline planning application has also been approved for a future development on the site. This will be for flexible retail and leisure use on the ground floor, with a dual use of office or hotel on the upper levels.
Plans for the site also include new landscaped public areas with lighting and seating, as well as pedestrian and cycle paths to connect the River Foss and Hungate masterplan with the city centre and York Minster.
Located on the site of the former 19th Century Wool Market, the insurer’s new office has been inspired by the site’s artisan and textile past. The building’s glass and stone structure incorporates an elegant weave pattern, making reference to one of the city’s founding industries and taking inspiration from the City Walls. Designed by architectural firm Make and occupying nearly 50,000 sq ft over four floors, the building will be bright and airy, boasting a stunning atrium and a roof terrace with views of York Minster.
