It is a requirement for all accredited energy assessors to have professional indemnity insurance and to join a certified scheme. That’s why Hiscox has developed a professional indemnity insurance policy to meet the risks you face in this new and fast-growing professional trade.
Our policy is tailored towards professionals working in domestic and non-domestic energy assessing and energy performance certificate (EPC) provision. It protects energy assessors and home inspectors from the cost of settling or defending a client’s claim that there is a problem with the work they have done for them, for example a mistake in an EPC that they claim prevented the sale of a house.
What does Hiscox energy assessors and home inspectors professional indemnity insurance cover?
- negligence or breach of duty of care – making a mistake in your work or giving bad advice
- defence costs for investigations under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 or similar legislation
- infringement of intellectual property rights – for example using content from a website or publication without permission
- breach of confidence – sharing confidential or sensitive information without consent
- civil liability – if a claim occurs because of your business activity for a client and we haven’t specifically excluded it, it’s covered.

What insurance does an energy assessor need?
For energy assessors, insurance should be high on the list of priorities when it comes to protecting their business. For example, to become an accredited energy assessor you’ll need professional indemnity insurance in place. But you may also benefit from other kinds of cover. For example, public liability insurance could protect you against a claim for bodily injury or property damage from a client or member of the public, and employers’ liability covers claims from employees for injury or disease arising from their work for you. What would you do, for example, if a client fell over your work equipment and brought a claim against you for compensation? Public liability insurance is designed to cover these types of claims, which can be costly and disruptive without the right insurance in place. You may also benefit from things like office insurance, cyber and data risks insurance and personal accident insurance.
